Joel-Peter Witkin

I recently discovered artist Joel-Peter Witkin, and I can’t get enough. His imagery is incredibly dark and cerebral. Below is one of my favorites — it’s called “Cuisine of a Failed Romance”, and it gave me the shivers when I stumbled across it.

I had decided that a work of his would be my first major art purchase. Of course, I have tons of posters, and a handful of relatively inexpensive pieces by local artists. But I figured Witkin’s art would set me back a bit. It would actually set me back a LOT, though. A 16″ x 20″ gelatin silver of the above can be had for $5,000. A 30″ x 40″ would set me back $10,000.

Oh well … guess I’ll have to settle for gazing at them longingly online. Gaze with me.

  1. I used to love JPW until I decided to hate him. He advertises for amputees to model for him and then gives them a print as payment. I don’t know. I just hate him at this point. I’m like that.
